5 tips for choosing your senior session outfits

as a blog photographer who shoots mostly with fashion bloggers, i've learned a thing or two about choosing outfits that photograph well. you want to make sure that your outfits will look good in photos, but you also want to make sure that they will help you look your best in your photos! i shared a few tips here about how to have a flawless senior session. but one big tip from that post is to choose outfits that you feel comfortable in. & while comfort is important, so are the following five tips:

1. choose outfits that are flattering to your body type
you want to choose outfits that truly flatter you. each body is different, so what may look good on one person may not look best on YOU. make sure that your outfits flatters your body & that you feel comfortable. one of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing outfits for photos is that they choose an outfit that they don't feel comfortable in (ie: they're pulling at their skirt or constantly checking to make sure everything is where it's supposed to be) and they look uncomfortable in their photos. their smiles are strained & they look a little stressed. so choose clothes that are flattering to you that make you feel like the confident rock star you are.

2. choose outfits that you can move in
the best photos are the ones that show emotion. a lot of photographers use movement to help draw out natural emotions. make sure that you can move in your outfit choices. ALSO (bonus tip) choosing clothes that are flowy (think chiffon dress or skirt) adds more natural movement (emotion) to the photo. and movement is always good!

3. choose outfits that you feel confident in
you want to feel confident. remember in tip number one when i talked about how people choose outfits they don't feel comfortable in & then they look strained? it's hard to feel confident in clothes that you don't love or feel make you look your best. confidence is key to looking your best. so choose the outfit that makes you feel like your absolute best!

4. choose outfits that are simple
you don't want your outfit to overshadow your photo. choose simple outfits that model your personality. the main focus of the photo should be YOU, not your outfit, not the location, not the pose, but YOU.

5. choose outfits that make you feel like your best self
i can't stress this enough. when you feel like your best self, your photos show that. choose outfits that make you feel like a million bucks & then act like it, because you ARE a million bucks!

5 tips to have a flawless senior portrait session

although i typically am a blog photographer, i have shot quite a few senior sessions this year & i've learned a thing or two along the way that might help you while you're planning your senior session!

CALEE-SENIOR-PICTURES-sadiebanksphotography-38.jpg

1. get your hair & makeup done professionally
hiring a hair & makeup artist can really help amplify the gorgeous features you already have! send them pictures of what you like and don't like so they can get a good idea of what type of makeup/hair style that you'll feel your best in. i also recommend using a bit more makeup than you're used to so that your facial features don't look flat in your photos. (false eyelashes usually help accent your eyes too!)

2. plan your outfits according to your personality
you want to feel comfortable in whatever you're wearing, so wear clothes that you genuinely love! if you like edgy clothes, wear something edgy! if you like simple, neutral clothes, rock the simple & neutral look! if you're feeling uncomfortable in your outfit, that will show through in your photos, so choose clothes that mirror your personality!

3. choose simple locations
your senior photos are supposed to highlight YOU, so choose locations that do just that! simple locations really point the focus of the photos to you as the subject!

4. trust your photographer
sometimes photographers ask you to do things like, pull a tree branch near your face or sit in a really random spot, but if you trust your photographer, they can create some really great shots for you & make portraits rather than just shoot boring poses!

5. be yourself
this tip is the most important because YOU are the subject & people want to see YOU in your photos! be yourself & enjoy your session! if you have fun & be yourself, you'll look back on your photos & simply love them because they really show who you are!

2017-2018 senior rep retreat

the class of 2018 has some incredible people in it! this last weekend, i had the opportunity to spend time with 5 of the best in the class!! there was so much that went into the senior rep retreat that there's no way i can share all of the photos in one post, so this will be the first in a series of posts about the senior rep retreat!

we started off the retreat with the opening ceremonies dinner. it was held at my parents' house & my sister made this incredible (AND EASY) chicken parmesan + spaghetti meal. it was seriously so yummy! there was also a salad + brownies & ice cream for dessert. (& i'm just now realizing that i forgot to take a picture of the chicken parm... SORRY SHAYE!!!) but it was still delicious.

after the opening ceremonies dinner, we headed to the garden (which is one of my favorite locations of all time) for their first shoot. it was more of a bohemian style shoot & all of the girls wore white summer dresses & it seriously turned out perfectly. the summer light + the garden + the girls in their white summer dresses was just so good.

then after the shoot we headed up to the ledges vacation rental for the weekend! i was so excited about the vacation rental because it is seriously what my house dreams are made of. we owe a huge thank you to the gardners for letting us stay there! if you're looking to go to st. george for a weekend getaway, i highly recommend staying at the ledges vacation rentals! they are spacious, have tons of natural light & are modern! plus there's a pool!!!

on friday, our big shoot was in collaboration with Ooh La La Dress Rentals. girls, if you're looking for a prom dress & don't want to fork out $300+ for a dress, GO TO OOH LA LA! they have tons & tons of dresses + plenty of styles to choose from! the girls had a blast trying on all of the different dresses & each one of them found gorgeous dresses that matched their style + personality!
& we owe a huge thank you to lark (@hairbylark) for doing hair + make up! the girls looked absolutely stunning & it was so fun to have lark come & get them all dolled up for the formal shoot!

after the formal shoot, my best friend rachel talked with the girls about having the courage to pursue their dreams. after hanging out with these girls & hearing their dreams & goals, i seriously cannot wait to see what they do & where they go in life! they are such go-getters! the world is at their feet + they are so prepared & ready to take on the world! i am so excited for them!

on saturday, we did a brand shoot with thread wallets. if you know me, you know i'm obsessed with thread wallets. so i was particularly stoked when they agreed to do a collaboration for the senior rep retreat!

the senior rep retreat was a definite check off of my bucket list! i've been wanting to do a rep program since i started my business & this weekend was an absolute dream! i am so excited for the 2017-2018 school year & can't wait to work with more seniors this year!
